CONSTRUCTION AND TRANSPORTATION: THE STORY OF TERPEX

Challenges in Nigeria’s Gas Sector

Nigeria, despite its vast natural gas reserves, has struggled with infrastructure issues that limit domestic gas utilization. The country has faced challenges like inadequate LPG storage and distribution, leading to energy inefficiencies, shortages, and higher costs for consumers.

The Transition to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)

To meet global climate goals under COP26, Nigeria is transitioning to cleaner energy, with CNG as a key component. CNG is a more sustainable and cost-effective alternative to traditional fuels, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting energy efficiency.

The Terpex Project: Revolutionizing Nigeria’s LPG Supply Chain

The Terpex project, funded by Africa Plus Funds with a N3.6 billion investment, is set to transform Nigeria’s LPG infrastructure. As described by Africa Plus Funds, “This investment serves to finance the construction and operation of a 2400MT inland storage plant. This investment seeks to democratize the supply chain of liquefied petroleum gas across Nigeria through the provision of bulk storage facilities.”

The 2400MT plant will enhance LPG storage, ensure a stable supply, and provide dedicated facilities for servicing gas trucks. This development is crucial for reducing supply disruptions and making LPG more accessible across Nigeria.

The Future of CNG in Nigeria

Complementing the Terpex project, the Nigerian government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has inaugurated CNG buses to support the country’s energy transition. Tinubu noted, “The inauguration of these CNG buses marks a major milestone in our journey towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.”

Together, the Terpex project and the CNG initiatives are pivotal in addressing Nigeria’s energy challenges and positioning the country as a leader in sustainable energy.
